Looking for a place to happen.

I’ve been a jack of all trades since 1996. The choice at the start of my career was simple: generalize or specialize. I generalized out of curiosity and boredom prevention. Now I wonder, is that approach a mistake? Is the question of generalizing or specializing still relevant? A friend of mine (Rod) said it perfectly: “People with broad interests are rarely successful.

Android Inventor is RAD.

The announcement that Google was releasing a “no skills needed” tool set for creating Android applications sent shivers down my spine. Hearing it was MIT material caused a small seizure. It’s scary for us developers to find out that our introverted, caveman empires are made of straw. After all, saying you can program Android applications now means you have the same basic qualifications as Keyboard Cat.

Bootstrapping a Django-with-Mongo project. A Layman’s guide.

Django and Mongo are a great combination for rapid prototyping. I’ve been using these two technologies for a while and thought I would share my notes on how to bootstrap a new project. I wasn’t able to find a single walk-through that covered the various bumps-in-the-road that I was running over; hence this post. The process that follows was written for Ubuntu 10.04 (amd64) but should translate to other flavors.
